<text>In the Presidential election of 1872, Ulysses S Grant was challenged by Horace Greeley. Grant was corrupt and incompetent, and Greeley opposed suffrage. Women voters didn’t have much of a choice - which was appropriate, since there weren’t any women voters.

Susan B Anthony was already famous when she & 14 other women successfully registered to vote in Rochester NY. At the polls on Nov 5 1872, their credentials were challenged. The state inspectors asked under oath if Anthony was a citizen, if she lived in the district, and

...if she had accepted any bribe for her vote. She said no. They accepted her ballot. 12 days later she was under arrest. @AnnDGordon tells the whole story: https://t.co/ZyKi7qf5ot They weren’t the only women who tried to vote.

The New Departure was a direct action and litigation strategy: women would try to vote, be turned away, then sue the registrar. The goal was to get the Supreme Court to say the 14th & 15th Amendments defined voting as an inherent right of citizenship for all. #Suffrage100

</text>

<text>1. Like all good civil disobedience actions, Susan B Anthony’s was well-planned. Century of Struggle describes the whole effort: she recruited more than a dozen women to vote together, “assured herself of first-rate legal advice, and promised the election inspectors...

2. (whom she had convinced by the force of her arguments that they should register her group) that she would cover all costs if legal steps were taken against them!” In the months before her trial she spoke so widely in the county that the prosecution demanded a change of venue.

3. Susan B’s goal was to get her case to the Supreme Court, which President Grant was determined to prevent. Although she was convicted, she was only fined $100 - the law provided for up to $500 - and when she refused to pay, Judge Hunt didn’t jail her, thwarting her on purpose.

4. She wanted to go to jail so she could file a writ of habeas corpus to the Supreme Court. The election inspectors who let Susan B and the other Rochester women vote were convicted in the same trial, and then pardoned by President Grant.

5. Politicized appointment of unfit Supreme Court justices is not a modern invention. Justice Ward Hunt was appointed by Ulysses S Grant at the request of NY Senator and Republican Party boss Roscoe Conkling. Fin. oyez.org says: “To say that Hunt accomplished little on the Court would be an overstatement. He was given little to do and did just about that.” #Suffrage100</text>

<text>By the 1876 US centennial, women had been demanding the vote for nearly 30 years. The light bulb was not yet invented.
As the National and the American Woman Suffrage Assoc's developed their separate identities in the 1870s, more African-American women joined the American.

But Mary Ann Shadd Cary aligned herself with the National b/c they were more radical and less devoted to the Republican party. (Reconstruction was about to be undone by Republican President Rutherford B Hayes, elected in 1876.) Shadd Cary endorsed the National’s New Departure, a more daring strategy than what the American was proposing. And despite Stanton & Anthony’s racism, Shadd Cary kept pushing them to do better. She gathered the names of 94 African-American women from Washington D.C. for the National's new centennial Declaration of Rights.

At the centennial celebration in Philadelphia, the National’s leaders - Stanton, Anthony, Gage et al - executed an amazing bit of political theatre. They took over the stage to present a new Declaration with new signatories. The Black women’s names were not included. #Suffrage100 </text>

<text>Memphis was rebuilding when Ida B. Wells arrived in the 1880s. After the yellow fever epidemic, the city levied a tax to build drainage systems & fight mosquitoes. The city fathers were white, but a growing Black population garnered some power: school board seats, police hires.

Accomplished Black women in town were resisting segregation. Jane Brown sued and won after a Memphis railroad made her change cars. Julia Hooks refused to move from her seat in a downtown theatre: she was thrown out, jailed, and fined. When the conductor grabbed her to haul her off the train, she bit his hand.

Whites stood on their seats to watch, and applauded when she was taken off the train. #IdaBWells sued for violation of the Tennessee “separate but equal” railway policy, as there was no Black 1st class ladies car. She won. She was 21 years old.</text>

Wells asked them “what they thought was the cause.”

“They had heard that Negroes were afraid of electricity,” she recalled them saying. She pointed out that it had been 6 months since the switch to electric streetcars. “How long since you have observed the change [in ridership]?”

“About six weeks,” they admitted. “Why, it was just six weeks ago that the lynching took place.” “The streetcar company had nothing to do with the lynchings,” replied the City Railway men. “It is owned by Northern capitalists.”

As soon as they left Ida B Wells wrote a piece for the next edition of the Free Press with the news that the economic pressure was being felt. Through the paper and local churches, she encouraged Black Memphis to keep boycotting the streetcars - while folks prepared to leave town for good. </text>

<text>My adult interest in the suffrage movement began with Alice Paul. If Stanton & Anthony - and other women whose names I didn’t yet know - were Moses, then Alice Paul was Joshua, leading us into the Promised Land. Without her the struggle could have taken years longer.

Decades before SNCC or Act Up, Alice Paul made political theater that worked. Most of it had never been done before: a massive parade alongside a Presidential inauguration; protesters continually picketing the White House; women as domestic political prisoners. It was genius.

Then, after we won the 19th Amendment, Alice Paul wrote the ERA. Her belief in absolute legal and political equality for women spoke to me when I first learned about her from Reva Siegel. Though I now know more about Alice's flaws, it still does. #Suffrage100 #KnowYour19th</text>

<text>More tax protests! 15 years after Lucy Stone’s tax protest, even more women refused to be taxed until they were represented.

Dec 16, 1873 - 100 years since the Boston Tea Party - Dr. Clemence Lozier called for a mass tax protest in New York.

“One hundred years ago our ancestors precipitated a rebellion by refusing to pay a tax on Tea, imposed against their will. At the end of a century 20,000,000 of their daughters are suffering precisely the same wrong…” [More tomorrow on Dr. Lozier!]

In the decade of the American centennial, the language of the Revolution resonated with more and more women. Tax Protest Leagues appeared in Chicago, San Francisco, and New York; women also refused to pay taxes in San Jose, Colorado Springs, and Des Moines.

Linda Kerber explains that taxes were about the only obligation of citizenship that women could refuse: “Women could not refuse to serve on juries, since no one asked them. Women could not refuse militia service, since no one asked them. But women could refuse to pay taxes and voting for representatives had been linked to paying taxes ever since the tea was thrown into Boston Harbor.” #Suffrage100 </text>
