In her 1st case before #SCOTUS, Belva Lockwood argued that her client’s property was seized unlawfully b/c as a woman, her signature on the underlying deed was insufficient. (Thx @suffcity100)

It was an ironic use of women’s legal invisibility to defend her client’s interests.

We don’t know how Belva felt about it. Maybe it stung, or maybe it satisfied. In the years before marriage equality, most of the time gays lost out on benefits we should have had - but occasionally we avoided an unwanted obligation, and I never felt bad about that.

Belva Lockwood helped create an Old Girls Network in the SupCt Bar. 20 women were admitted 1880-1900, many sponsored by other women. Kate Hamilton Pier & her 3 daughters from Wisconsin. Marilla Ricker, who got the highest score on the DC Bar exam. Myra Bradwell, denied in 1873.

Description
An account of the resource
If you’ve heard of Belva Lockwood, it’s likely b/c she was the 1st woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court, in 1880. First, she spent 5 years lobbying Congress to pass an anti-discrimination bill to let women practice law in federal court. Pres. Hayes signed it in 1879.

After that, she became a member of the Supreme Court bar. Members can sponsor others to join, and Lockwood sponsored Samuel R Lowery, making him the 5th Black attorney admitted. He was later the 1st Black attorney to argue before the Court. She later ran for President.

I was hard on Ulysses S Grant the other day, but he gets credit for helping Lockwood get her law school diploma, which had been denied on account of sex. She wrote Prez Grant, who had authority over Nat'l Law School where she had completed her coursework. It arrived a week later.

An account of the resource
It’s the first Monday in October! @DailySuffragist is going to dwell a bit on the early history of women at the Supreme Court. First up, Lucy Prince - and some bad news. #Suffrage100 #BlackWomen #SCOTUS Oct

Lucy Prince did not argue before the Supreme Court. It’s a great story: that a woman kidnapped from Africa, who grew up enslaved in Massachusetts, would be the first woman to do so. Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina exhaustively researched the tale & definitively dispelled it.

But Lucy did defend her family’s farm to the Governor of Vermont in 1785, “probably the first time a black person, let alone an African woman, had addressed the highest officials in the state.” She won, and was later affirmed by the Vermont Supreme Court. #FirstMonday
