16 women really did walk to Washington to participate in the original Women’s March, on the occasion of Woodrow Wilson’s 1913 inauguration.

“General†Rosalie Jones led the contingent, which left New York City in February. She’s at far left w/the megaphone. 📣🧵

They walked for 20 days, speaking and distributing suffrage leaflets as they went. It's 200 miles now and it was 200 miles then, but the footwear was a lot less forgiving. This horse and carriage were their traveling billboard.

Rosalie tested this publicity stunt just 2 months prior, leading a contingent from NYC to Albany to present a petition to the governor. (By 1912, NY was an outlier in denying women the vote: most western states had full suffrage; in others we could vote in local elections.)

Rosalie's mother tried to insist she turn back -- not just for fear of blisters. Rosalie was from a wealthy family and her mother belonged to the NY Anti-Suffrage Association. 🙀 She clearly didn’t know her daughter very well: Rosalie refused. She made it to Albany, and later DC.

The march succeeded: it heightened anticipation of the DC rally and demonstrated that women weren’t too frail for a grueling trek. It also helped a working woman prove herself: reporter Emma Bugbee of the NY Trib, who joined the march to get the story

“The Woman Suffrage procession moved down Fifth Avenue yesterday to the meeting of protest in Union Square, well guarded by the mounted police.

New York Times, May 22, 1910

The protest was against the action, or lack of it, taken by the legislators at Albany in regard to the Woman Suffrage bill which they cannot be persuaded to vote out of committee...

There were 10,000 persons in Union Square who listened to the speeches the women made.

It was the biggest suffrage demonstration ever held in the US.

The women taking part in the demonstration went in procession, some in automobiles and others on foot. Many of them had never taken part in anything of the kind before, and were resolute, but a good deal scared.”

An account of the resource
Cities around the country instituted curfews this week to restrict protest, so it’s a good time to recall when suffragists were out after dark.

In 1912, New York City suffragists lit the darkest night of the year with a massive nighttime demonstration. 🮠thread.

Only six months after a massive spring march, NYC suffragists wanted to show their power again.

Women had won the vote in three new states that year - Kansas, Oregon, and Arizona - and fundraising for a new effort in New York was already underway.

They planned the march for 8 p.m. on a Sunday night in the middle of November. The late hour was intended to enable more working women to participate, and to set the stage for a dramatic display.

@LCSantangelo told the story at @nyhistory:

The organizers ordered 5,000 Japanese lanterns. In addition, “men planned to wear miners’ lamps, parade marshals to wield batons topped with electric lightbulbs, & automobiles to carry searchlights. Lobbyists expected to create ‘one long blaze of glory’ in support of the ballot.†

Not everyone thought this was a great idea.

“Some worried that the 8 pm start time would breed a rowdier atmosphere; others fretted about the dangers of returning home once the demonstration concluded. Women might be accepted on the streets during the daytime, but now-- organizers were asking them to march at a time of day when many believed that ‘respectable’ women should not be out in public without male escorts.†

It was rainy and cold, but they pulled it off.

There was no violence, and showed women were willing to take risks and push boundaries to win. And it looked spectacular.

The headline in Monday's Times, above the fold: “400,000 Cheer Suffrage March--20,000 Women in Great Parade--Fifth Avenue a River of Fire.†#Suffrage100Â

An account of the resource
As 1913 began, planning was underway for a massive suffrage march and pageant to take place in Washington, DC on March 3, the day before #WoodrowWilson’s inauguration.

Black women wrote the organizers to ask if they were welcome. If you have to ask . . . 🧵

Nellie Quander wrote Alice Paul on Feb 17, oozing politeness. “Fearing that a letter which I sent you has gone astray…†she begins, and then restates her question: Will the @HowardU AKA women march in the collegiate section? Or will they be segregated at the back of the march?

Alice Paul, the lead organizer, had for weeks been ducking this and other questions about African American women’s participation. Throughout January she wrote Alice Stone Blackwell, editor of the largest suffrage publication, trying to keep the issue out of the paper.

They didn’t succeed. Adella Hunt Logan, an African American suffragist who taught at @TuskegeeUniv in Alabama, noticed an item in the Woman’s Journal saying white women wouldn’t march if Black women participated. She tipped off Mary Church Terrell.

Terrell was in DC, and able to rally local Black suffragists. Among them were the Alpha Kappa Alpha women. Nellie Quander was eager to get an assurance from the march organizers b/c a group of her members was threatening to break off & create a more politically engaged sorority.

They did -- creating Delta Sigma Theta @dstinc1913 See illustration of the founders👇ðŸ¾The Deltas’ first public action was to march in the suffrage parade. Mary Church Terrell marched with them. Ironically, in the end the @akasorority1908 didn’t march as a group.

All the white northern women organizing the march insisted to one another that while THEY weren’t racist, they feared an integrated march would hurt the cause. Their letters make clear they all wished Black women wouldn’t show up.

Tomorrow: Ida B Wells arrives from Chicago.

Black women at the Inaugural March, part II

A large Illinois delegation--some accounts say 62 people, others 65--came to Washington for the 1913 inauguration suffrage march. #IdaBWells was the only African American in the group. She represented the new Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago. Thread.

Two months before, Ida had co-founded Alpha with two white women, Virginia Brooks & Belle Squires. It differed from the Women’s Second Ward Republican Club, which Ida organized in 1910. The Republicans' star was dimming, and being tied to the party was no longer an asset.

Alpha was non-partisan, city-wide, and suffrage-focused. Some Black women were skeptical about about the movement, given discrimination by white suffragists and a fear that suffrage➡️more votes for white supremacy. But Ida was determined to engage Black women to win the fight.

Alpha Suffrage Club’s first order of business was to send the women to Washington for the march. When they all arrived, the Illinois delegation went to parade headquarters. A Chicago Tribune reporter accompanied the group for the whole trip and reported on what transpired.

Grace Trout, leader of the Illinois delegation, burst into the room and announced that Ida couldn’t march with them. She said it wasn’t up to her, it was the decision of NAWSA, Alice Paul, and Alice Stone Blackwell. She claimed they had no choice.

A Georgia-born woman from Oak Park agreed: “You are right, it will prejudice southern people against suffrage if we take colored women into our ranks.” Ida was standing right there, and had been a prominent Illinois suffragist longer than most of the women in the room.

Absolutely not, said Ida's colleague Virginia Brooks. “We have come down here to march for equal rights. If the women of other states lack moral courage...we are not afraid of public opinion. If the women didn't stand by their principles, the parade will be a farce.”

Ida's voice trembled as she spoke about the harm to the cause, not the personal insult. “If the Illinois women do not take a stand now in this great democratic parade then the colored women are lost.”

Grace Trout said she’d try, then left to negotiate. Returning, she said that if it were up to her, Ida would march with them, but NAWSA said no.

Do you think IdaBWells accepted this? Have you met her?

Tune in tomorrow . . .

Black women at the Inaugural March, part III

Ida B Wells is the hero of our story. At the 1913 suffrage march she was 50 years old, mother of 4, an established community leader in Chicago.

But since white women are looking for anti-racist models, let’s spend a moment on Ida’s colleagues Virginia Brooks & Belle Squire.🧵

When we left off, the Illinois suffrage delegation had just confirmed that Ida was being booted from the group at the insistence of the organizers. Virginia Brooks objected, loudly. She and Belle Squire had co-founded the new Alpha Suffrage Club with Ida. [Alpha Suffrage Club arrives in Washington]

Belle Squire was Ida’s contemporary. She founded the No Vote, No Tax League, first in Cook County and then throughout the state. She led more than 5,000 Illinois women in refusing to pay taxes until they could vote. She is on the right👇ðŸ¾in 1911. So much in this photo.

Belle got attention for insisting on being called “Mrs†Squire, though she was not married. “Why should a woman remain Miss until death or marriage?" she asked. "The boy changes his title from master to mister as soon as he wishes--as soon as he gets into long pants

"and is introduced to a razor. They say it's confusing. They will not know then whether we are single or married. I don't think it is anybody's business what we are. Why should we be obliged to print our marital relations on our business cards? Men don't." 🔥🔥🔥

Virginia Brooks was 27, a generation younger than Belle and Ida. She grew up in Hyde Park, where her parents owned boardinghouses. When her father died, she inherited property in West Hammond (now Calumet City), on the Illinois/Indiana border. She and her mother moved there.

Illinois women won school suffrage back in 1891. In 1912 Brooks ran for West Hammond school board and won. In addition to her local political work, her suffrage activity spanned Illinois and Indiana. She was an active member of the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association.

When Ida was ejected from the Illinois delegation, Virginia Brooks & Belle Squire announced that they would join her if she were willing to march in a different section. Ida appeared to consent. Shortly thereafter everyone left to assemble for the march.

As the delegation lined up, all three women were missing. Virginia Brooks appeared & went looking for the other two. She found Belle Squire but not Ida. The two of them concluded she had decided to boycott, understandably. Then, as they began to march,

“Suddenly from the crowd on the sidewalk Mrs. Barnett walked calmly out to the delegation and assumed her place at the side of Mrs. Squire. There was no question raised . . . and she finished the parade.†Photo👇ðŸ¾ran in the Chicago Tribune. #BlackSuffragists #CenturyofStruggle

Description
An account of the resource
The 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession really was the original Women’s March. It called women from around the country to Washington, DC for Inauguration Day. They were there to send a message to the newly elected President, who won his office with a minority of national support.🧵

It wasn’t the first parade down the avenues of our 51st state, but it was the first civil rights protest. As Rebecca Boggs Roberts says in her overview of the march, every cause that has marched on Washington literally followed in their footsteps. https://t.co/jfbzYFjszU

Alice Paul & Lucy Burns get credit and blame for nearly every detail of the elaborate planning, its genius as well as its racist exclusions. Two documents @LibraryCongress displayed in their lavish exhibit “Shall Not Be Denied†that capture some of the massive planning effort.👇

First, a photo of women leafleting on the street in DC to advertise the march. For so much of the suffrage movement we can only imagine events, not see them. After the turn of the century we begin to have action shots of suffragists at work, which are thrilling.

Second, a Pledge to March form, with logistics like timing for special suffrage trains from New York. And at the top,

WHY YOU MUST MARCH

*Because this is the most conspicuous and important demonstration that has ever been attempted by suffragists in this country.

*Because this parade will be taken to indicate the importance of the suffrage movement by the press of the country and the thousands of spectators from all over the United States gathered in Washington for the Inauguration.

*Because by marching in Washington you will help the cause of votes for women in every State were suffrage has not yet been won. #Suffrage100 #CenturyofStruggleÂ

Description
An account of the resource
Had the 1913 march gone flawlessly it would have been less of a success. Alice Paul immediately realized that the violent disruption and police indifference were a gift.

On Inauguration Day, suffrage dominated the headlines. 🧵

“WILSON TAKES OFFICE TO-DAY AS 28TH PRESIDENT--Slips Quietly Into the Capital While Suffragists Are Parading†@nytimes on March 4, 1913

While Wilson gave his inaugural address, suffragists leafleted the crowd demanding a Congressional inquiry.

A Senate subcommittee began investigating before the week was over. This kept the march in the news for weeks.

Friday, March 7: “Police Idly Watched Abuse of Women--Shocking Insults to Suffrage Paraders Testified To at Washington Inquiry†-NYTimes

Monday, March 10--a full week later: The Sacramento Bee ran a photo above the fold 👇

The Senate inquiry went on for a month. 40 women testified, of the 8,000 women who marched, as did numerous spectators and police officers. The proceedings were chaired by Sen. Wesley Jones of Washington. He was accountable to women in his state, who had won the vote in 1910.

The full inquest was published - it ran to 600 pages. Great descriptions in @tinacassidy2 & @EllenDuBois10’s recent books: while the Senate found the police had acted with indifference, Chief Wm Sylvester was exonerated. This infuriated the suffragists, generating more protest.

The long-dormant Senate Committee on Woman Suffrage was reinstated -- and composed of Senators from the suffrage states. Alice Paul & Lucy Burns had clamped jumper cables to the federal effort, and restarted it. #Suffrage100 #CenturyofStruggle #VotesforWomen
