"Unladylike"
Have you seen the PBS series Unladylike? It features suffragists like Mary Church Terrell, Rose Schneiderman, and Tye Leung Schulze alongside other notables (Gladys Bentley!)

1. Each 12-minute episode features a contemporary activist who mirrors the historical woman.

In the Terrell segment they feature

@MsPackyetti and for Schneiderman, @aijenpoo. Both good choices.

2. The voices of Lorraine Touissant & Juliana Margulies are heard throughout; eg Touissant voices Terrell while Margulies narrates -- then vice-versa for Schneiderman.

The segments are all available to watch. Which ones did you watch? What do you think?

Best film to show your class
If I told you there was a suffrage documentary that began with Lucretia Mott and ended with Fannie Lou Hamer, that felt contemporary and engaging for students of all ages, and that was only 44 minutes, would you want to hear more? Student multi-media thread.

“She the People†was made for Smithsonian Channel. Smithsonian curators like @kate_c_lemay and @cmmphd are the talking heads, and items from the collection - like Susan B’s red shawl - are focal points. The live reenactments might not be to everyone’s taste, but the extensive colorized photographs are incredible.

It’s accurate, inclusive, and did I mention only 44 minutes? The only challenge is finding it. Go to Google Play and search “She the People†and you can watch for $1.99. Theoretically available elsewhere, but 🤷

And one more podcast…

Adding to my serial podcast roundup from a few weeks ago: The Magic Sash is aimed at kids 9-13. I tried it out on three kids 9-13, and they actually asked to keep listening. Mary Ann Shadd Cary would have fit in to the time travel plot nicely, but overall it’s not bad.
#19thamendment

Daily Suffragist before Daily Suffragist
Awed and humbled by the beautiful work of David Dismore, longtime archivist @FemMajority. Until his death a year ago he was posting daily about suffrage. I can't touch his level of mastery, so instead of posting more about the 1913 march, I encourage you to read his work.👇

How to DO something
Some *participatory* projects to honor and commemorate the women who fought for freedom:

First, obviously: vote, register voters, and if you can, work the polls: workelections.com

Second, transcribe!

@Crowd_LOC makes it easy, anytime.

Looks like Mary Church Terrell & Anna Dickinson’s papers are mostly complete, but still lots of NAWSA records need transcribing, and much Blackwell family material. https://crowd.loc.gov/topics/suffrage-women-fight-for-the-vote/

Follow @Laura_R_Prieto for suffrage transcribe-a-thons & wikipedia-edit-a-thons. I learned how to edit on Wikipedia thanks to Laura and the team at Simmons, and it’s an empowering tool. Follow @CCP_org for #DouglassDay transcription and other digital activism.

Lastly, pay your respects. I had a lot of fun helping @womenthevotenys map the gravesites of suffragists and other women activists in New York. Listen up! Podcast reviews.
So many podcasts! At least 4 new podcasts celebrate the centennial. If only someone would listen to all of them and recommend-- @DailySuffragist, at your service.

They each have strengths, and appeal to subtly different audiences. I listened to all available episodes + a preview of one show. So many marvelous experts were generous with their time. All four podcasts feature @MarthaSJones_, who says something insightful and different in each. Other frequent fliers who offer wonderful commentary include @aklange1 @LisaTetrault2 @EllenDubois10 & @efweiss5.

SheVotes! is hosted by @LynnSherr & @EllenGoodman, experts who have devoted their lives to sharing women’s history with mainstream audiences. Highlights inc. @PainterNell on Sojourner Truth, a great bit on Alice Duer Miller, and the ultimate coup: Christine Baranski as Susan B Anthony.

And Nothing Less has star power: it’s hosted by ROSARIO DAWSON and @unfoRETTAble, with great music and the highest production values of the bunch. It’s the only one hosted by women of color; their ownership of this American story feels very satisfying.

Waiting for Liberty begins with the common “I didn’t know anything about suffrage/I wasn’t taught this in school†refrain that I find off-putting. It’s a form of Female Apology Syndrome and a rationalization of ignorance that is too common in talking about race and sex. But I stuck with it…

...and was rewarded with the chance to meet suffragist Helen Hamilton Gardener, courtesy of @ProfessorHamlin, and others whose work is less familiar, like @CorinneField. For better/worse, host Maggie Hart is doing Women’s Studies 101; she begins with a good explanation of coverture.

Starting August 26 you can listen to Amended, which is the deepest dive of the four. Hosted by Prof. Laura Free, it is the most coherent and purposeful effort by a white historian to grapple with the racism that pervades the struggle. Black suffragists are foundational here, not extra. The second episode, in which @MarthaSJones_ tells the stories of three enslaved women, is breathtaking. Do not miss learning about the gift enslaved women gave all others in asserting their right to bodily autonomy. And how deeply embedded is the intimate disloyalty and complicity of white women. It’s 🔥🔥

Best all-around introduction is And Nothing Less; serious students shouldn’t miss Amended. But all four of them taught me something new or made me think of something in a new way. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to create these podcasts, and to tell these stories. They’re just getting started, so listen and share them over the months ahead.

Live-tweeting PBS' The Vote, Part II
Hoping they'll mention that after her two husbands, Carrie Chapman Catt spent the last 30+ years of her life with Mary Garrett Hay. Their relationship predates 1920, so that's not a relevant distinction. So many of the suffragists covered here - Catt, Anna Howard Shaw - were well-known to be partnered with women, which would have been nice to mention.

Read @WendyLRouse 👇Queering the suffrage movementðŸ³ï¸â€ðŸŒˆ #TheVotePBS

@hkergrrl Which one is she?!!

@marthasjones_ You made such an important point earlier today when you noted that Alice Paul didn't link arms with Hallie Q Brown and NACW after ratification. Airing of @AmExperiencePBS documentary called "The Vote"
Lucy Stone
Lucy Stone tried hard to bridge the gap between pro- and anti-15th Amdt camps. She argued for a middle path that would support Black men’s enfranchisement now, and commit to an immediate campaign for a 16th Amdt for women. But after years of debate, the split had grown too deep.

The 15th A supporters wanted fealty to the superior importance of Black male suffrage, full stop. So they were stuck: Stanton & Anthony insisted women’s votes be part of Reconstruction, Stephen Foster (a white abolitionist) and Frederick Douglass insisted they would have to wait.

Forced to choose, Lucy Stone supported the 15th A on its own merits: “ I will be thankful in my soul if _any_ body can get out of this terrible pit.“ This conflict is described vividly and insightfully by @EllenDubois10 in Feminism and Suffrage & Faye Dudden in Fighting Chance.

New York Times suffrage reparations
Who tells your story? 🎶

For women, the answer is usually no one. So go buy the Sunday @nytimes. The real thing! You want to hold this special section in your hand if you can.

To tempt you, a few highlights... Don't miss @CathleenDCahill's collaboration with @sarahdeer about Native women past & present, & @Maya__Salam's coverage of the work of @WendyLRouse and others to make sure the movement isn’t kept in the closet.

Everyone will learn something new - as always from @marthasjones_, whose search for her grandmother’s history connects so many threads of the voting rights movement. @jennyschuessler's piece about the Antis made me laugh out loud; and so much more. Even if you read them online!

The best part?
