Lucy Burns. She and Alice Paul were the Stanton & Anthony of the 3d generation. They met in jail in the UK learning from the Pankhursts & bonded over the slugishness of the movement at home. Together they picketed the White House, then jail, hunger strikes, force feeding. 👇 1917

An account of the resource
ElizCadyStanton’s feminism was ignited watching her mentor Lucretia Mott be denied credentials at the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London in 1840.

I knew that, but I didn’t know the backstory: fissures in the US abolitionist movement over women’s participation. Long thread.

Wm Lloyd Garrison’s abolitionist fervor led him to reject American govt & the Constitution entirely.

(FWIW Frederick Douglass disagreed, insisting the Constitution was fixable. IMO, rejecting it requires high confidence _you_ will have a say in the rewrite.💕 @heidibschreck)

By 1839, a split developed between the Garrisonian anarchists and a more pragmatic faction: political abolitionists, led by Elizabeth Cady’s cousin Gerrit Smith & a politician named Henry Stanton who wd become her husband. They thought those who could vote against slavery should.

Henry Stanton and the political abolitionists quit the American Anti-Slavery Society. Ironically given his fiance’s nascent feminism, their exit created opportunity for women. If the Garrisonians weren’t voting or running for office, women’s political disability was irrelevant.

Women like Abby Kelley (later Foster) seized the opportunity. She toured and lectured against slavery nationwide & helped launch Female AntiSlavery Conventions, a new idea, in 1837 & 1838.

In 1840 she was nominated to a seat on the board of the American Anti-Slavery Society. At the Society’s annual meeting on May 12, 1840, objection to Kelley’s participation was lodged.

A vote was called: 557 in her favor; 451 against. 3 men quit the committee rather than serve with her; they created a breakaway abolitionist group that barred women from leadership. Just one month after insulting Abby Kelley, a who’s who of American abolitionists went to London, all looking for validation.

Kathryn Kish Sklar explains that the issue of women’s participation was hotly anticipated, and not at all peripheral. She writes: “More than an abstract principle was contested here. The "woman question" became the means by which each side of the divided American movement was struggling to gain the extremely influential moral support and access to the extensive financial resources of the British movement.†

Lucretia Mott and the other women in the delegation - all accomplished abolitionist leaders in Philadelphia and Boston - were refused credentials. Garrison and 3 other men, inc. African-American Charles Remond (brother of Sarah), sat with the women in protest.

ElizCadyStanton wasn’t a delegate; she was accompanying her new husband. Lucretia Mott was the most memorable part of their honeymoon: “...the greatest wonder of the world--a woman who thought and had opinions of her own." #Suffrage100Â

When non-violent protest has failed, destroying property gets the attention of the ruling class.

Suffragette thread.

In the UK, Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters founded the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903.

WSPU was a breakaway from the staid National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, whose signature-gathering and leafleting weren’t working.

WSPU’s campaign escalated from chalking sidewalks to breaking windows to arson. Alice Paul was first arrested in London. On June 29, 1907 she joined the Pankhursts storming the House of Commons, frustrated the Prime Minister ignored their demand for action. In the slammer she met Lucy Burns, whose red hair and American flag pin were hard to miss. Thread.

On July 30, Alice and 11 other women forced their way into a speech by David Lloyd George. She was sentenced to two weeks in jail, where she refused to eat or wear prison clothes.

On September 12, Alice & Lucy broke windows in a hall where Winston Churchill was speaking.

Women across the UK were being arrested for disruptive suffrage protests - they spat at police officers, broke windows, shouted down politicians. In jail they refused to eat and were force-fed thru nasal tubes. @TinaCassidy2 describes this vividly in her book.👇Annie Kenney, 1905

In November the radical WSPU escalated its campaign against Churchill, an up-and-coming politician opposed to women’s suffrage. Lucy Burns infiltrated a fancy party, where she accosted him, asking: “How can you dine here while women are starving in prison?†

Alice Paul snuck into the party disguised as cleaning staff. When the crowd quieted for a toast, Alice & Amelia Brown smashed a stained glass window and were dragged out shouting “Votes for Women!†Alice spent nearly a month in jail, violently force fed twice a day. #Suffrage100

An account of the resource
When US suffragists began street demonstrations in 1910, the women in the UK had already become more brazen. They were holding huge demonstrations, intentionally provoking arrest, and more.

One of their leaders came to the US in 1907 to encourage us to be bolder. Thread.

Anne Cobden-Sanderson was first arrested in 1906 along with nine other members of the Women’s Social and Political Union, demonstrating at the House of Commons.

They were charged with using “threatening and abusive words and behaviour" and put on trial.

They chose two months in Holloway Prison rather than a £10 fine and six months good behavior.

The public was shocked that upper-class women would go to prison, but Anne said: “We have talked so much for the Cause now let us suffer for it.”

In 1909 Cobden-Sanderson was arrested for picketing 10 Downing Street with a petition to the Prime Minister. There’s a photo!

Harriot Stanton Blatch & Sarah Smith Garnet invited Cobden-Sanderson to the US in 1907.

Her visit was a coup for both Blatch’s Equality League and Garnet’s Brooklyn Equal Suffrage League. In the packed hall of the Cooper Union, Cobden-Sanderson emphasized how much the British movement owed to its working-class instigators.

@EllenDubois10 recounts: “After women factory workers were arrested for trying to see the prime minister, Cobden-Sanderson and other privileged women, who felt they ‘had not so much to lose as [the workers] had,’ decided to join them and get arrested.”'

She toured the US; her lecture at Bryn Mawr college was called “Why I Went to Prison.”

New York suffragists didn’t instantly become more radical, but Cobden-Sanderson and her stories of WSPU’s long prison terms had an impact. #Suffrage100 #CenturyofStruggle

Sustaining protest campaigns for months & years is so hard.

The UK suffragettes created tangible artifacts to honor their members’ sacrifices and motivate them to keep going.

🎖ï¸thread.

Women who had served time in prison were awarded a medal “For Valour†by the WSPU, the radical suffragettes.

The medal below belonged to Florence Haig. Its three bars commemorate each of her prison terms, plus a medallion for hunger striking.

Medals were awarded to each former prisoner in inscribed boxes, presented “By the Women’s Social & Political Union in recognition of a gallant action, whereby through endurance to the last extremity of hunger and hardship, a great principle of political justice was vindicated.†

In 1910 the WSPU made a quilt to commemorate the women who had gone to prison, refused food as political prisoners, and been force fed. Description
An account of the resource
At suffrage demonstrations in London, Rosa May Billinghurst responded to over-policing by ramming London bobbies with her wheelchair.

May, as she was known, joined radical suffragist Women’s Social & Political Union in 1907. She founded the Greenwich branch of WSPU in 1910.🧵

May was imprisoned several times: in March 1912 for a window-smashing campaign & sentenced to a month's hard labor. Then in December of that year for destroying mailboxes. The signatures of the women imprisoned in that campaign👇ðŸ¾May’s name is in the top left corner. @LSELibrary

May Billinghurst spoke in her own defense at trial.

“Gentlemen of the jury, I will ask you to allow me to explain some of the circumstances which have led me to be standing before you today in this dock. . . in order to fight for the liberation of women..."

She was sentenced to eight months in Holloway prison. She described the force-feeding in a letter to her mother.

“I have been in bed all the while on the hunger-strike since Thursday mid-day. Got very weak and vomited a great deal, blood as well as bile + my nose bled violently.

“On Monday 3 doctors came + examined me--as I had resisted the forcible feeding on Sunday--& on Monday evening 2 doctors, one being Dr Ford the prison doctor + many wardresses came into my cell + my head was forced back + a tube jambed down my nose. It was the most awful torture.

"I groaned with pain + I coughed + gulped the tube up and would not let it pass down my throat. Then they tried the other nostril + it was found that was smaller still & slightly deformed, I suppose from constant hay fever. The new doctor said it was impossible to get the tube down that one so they jambed it down again through the other + I wondered if the pain were as bad as child-birth.†--Letter @LSELibrary

May was ultimately released. A few months later she chained herself to the gates of Buckingham Palace.

Lisa Unger Baskin’s collection @DukeLibraries includes this exquisite certificate made out to Rosa May Billinghurst. It was designed by Sylvia Pankhurst and given to WSPU members after their release from prison.

It begins: “On behalf of all women who will win freedom by the bondage which you have endured for their sake, and dignity by the humiliation which you have gladly suffered for the uplifting of our sex, We, the Members of the Women’s Social and Political Union, herewith express our deep sense of admiration for your courage in enduring a long period of privation and solitary confinement in prison for the Votes for Women Cause, also our thanks to you for the great service that you have thereby rendered to the Woman’s Movement.†#Suffrage100 #CenturyofStruggle #CriptheVote #NoJusticeNoPeace
