Congrats to my friend Laura Wiessen, newly elected to the Gloucester, MA School Committee. In 1879, Mass. allowed women to vote for the 1st time, just for school committee. 5,000 women voted that year, including Louisa May Alcott. (Read 👇)
Lucy Stone registered in 1879 as well, prepared to cast her first public vote after 30 years of ceaseless effort for woman suffrage. However, she was removed from the rolls and not allowed to vote because she did not use her husband’s surname.
